Managing Subscriptions

The Subscriptions area is used to manage the available subscription models of a publication. Existing subscriptions can be viewed and edited here, and new subscriptions can be created.

This area is located in the red main navigation under:

Services > Subscriptions

Subscription Overview

The subscription overview shows all existing subscriptions, including status, price and other properties.

Above the table, there is a Create Subscription button. This button can be used to create a new subscription.

Columns in the Subscription Overview

The table contains various information about each subscription.

The Name column displays the name of the subscription.

Additional information about the duration or start date may also be displayed below it, for example:

  • Limited or unlimited duration

The arrows in the Position column can be used to adjust the order of the subscriptions.

The position may be relevant if subscriptions are displayed in a specific order in the app or in administration views.

The Categories column shows whether the subscription is assigned to specific categories.

Possible displays include:

  • A specific number of assigned categories (max. 6 categories)
  • All, if all categories are included

Creating a New Subscription

A new subscription is created via the Create Subscription button.

The form contains several areas in which properties, duration, access scope and further options can be defined.

General Information

Name

The name of the subscription is entered in the Name field.

The name is used for internal assignment and, depending on the configuration, may also be relevant for display in connected systems.

Active

The Active switch defines whether the subscription is active.

  • Enabled: The subscription can be used.
  • Disabled: The subscription cannot be actively used.

In-App Purchase

The In-App Purchase option defines whether the subscription can be purchased within the app.

This setting should be enabled if the subscription is to be purchased in the app via in-app purchase.

If the subscription is assigned exclusively through other methods, such as activation codes or manual assignment, this option can remain disabled.

Note on in-app subscriptions:
Subscriptions that are to be offered within the app via in-app purchase must also be created and configured in the respective stores. This requires the corresponding setup in Apple App Store Connect and/or the Google Play Console.

Enabling the In-App Purchase option in the Workbench alone is not sufficient for the subscription to be available for purchase in the app. The subscription must match the store products and be correctly linked to Apple and/or Google.

Defining the Duration

The duration area defines how long the subscription is valid.

Duration

The duration of the subscription is entered in the Duration field.

Duration Unit

The Duration Unit defines the unit in which the duration is calculated.

Unlimited

If the Unlimited option is enabled, the subscription has no time limit.

In this case, no fixed duration is required.

Start and End Date

A start and end date can be defined as an alternative or in addition to the duration.

Starts On

The Starts On field defines from when the subscription is valid.

Ends On

The Ends On field defines until when the subscription is valid.

If a duration is used, the end date may be determined automatically or manually depending on the configuration.

Access to Issues and Content

The lower section of the form defines which content the subscription grants access to.

Exclude Current Issue from Subscription

This option can be used to exclude the currently published issue from the subscription.

If this setting is enabled, the reader only receives access to the issue that is published at the start date of the subscription or, depending on the configured logic, does not receive access to the current issue.

This option may be relevant if subscriptions should only apply from a future issue onward.

Archive Issues

This option defines whether the subscription also grants access to archive issues.

If this option is enabled, the subscription includes all archive issues from the specified start date.

The end date can alternatively be controlled via the duration of the subscription.

Issue Subscription

The Issue Subscription option defines that the subscription grants access to issues.

Article Subscription

The Article Subscription option defines that the subscription grants access to articles.

Push Notification Segment

This option allows the subscription to be used as a segment for push notifications.

If this option is enabled, subscribers of this type can be targeted specifically via push notifications.

Chatbots

Chatbot assignments can be entered in the Chatbots field, provided that this function has been booked and activated for the publication.

Saving or Cancelling a Subscription

At the bottom of the form, there are two actions:

Cancel

Cancel ends the creation or editing process without saving the changes.

Create

Create saves and creates the new subscription.
